Enfield Business
1921
The company was founded in 1921 under the name “British Sangamo” as the United Kingdom subsidiary of the “Sangamo Electric Co.” of Springfield, Illinois, USA and was first concerned with the manufacture of integrating kilowatt hour meters and later expanded its activities to include industrial time switches.
1936
In 1936 British Sangamo acquired the “Weston Electrical Instrument Co.” of Surbiton, Surrey. This company was the United Kingdom subsidiary of the “Weston Electrical Instrument Corporation”, of Newark, New Jersey, USA, a company founded by Dr. Weston (a pioneer in the field of electrical measurements), and recognized as one of the worlds leading manufacturers of electrical measuring and associated equipment.
The resources, knowledge and expertise of the two companies were combined to form “Sangamo Weston”, a company with considerable scope for design and manufacture of a wide range of electrical measuring and control equipment.
1939-1945
It was through this newly acquired interest in electrical measuring instruments that Sangamo Weston became associated with products for the aviation industry and as a result, devoted its entire resources during the 1939-45 war, to the production of measuring instruments, indicators and associated ancillary equipment for use on aircraft. Since that period, although activities suspended during hostilities were resumed, Sangamo Weston continued to be responsible for the design and manufacture of a large number of aircraft measuring instruments, indicators, measuring systems and associated equipment for customers all over the world.
1975
In 1975, the “Sangamo Electric Co.” was acquired by the “Schlumberger” group of companies, who as a result, became the parent of “Sangamo Weston” and in 1977 all outstanding shares were acquired, making Sangamo Weston a wholly owned subsidiary of the Schlumberger group.
1977
In 1977 a new company “Schlumberger Measurement and Control (UK)” was formed, having Sangamo Weston as one of its subsidiaries, and as a result, Sangamo Weston was reorganized in order to improve the utilization of resources, facilities and efficiency generally, into separate production divisions. The name Weston Instruments was revived for the Instrument Division, which continued to be responsible for the design, development, production and marketing of aircraft instruments and associated ancillaries.
1982
In 1982, as part of a reorganization of the Schlumberger legal structure within the United Kingdom, Weston Instruments businesses, together with that of Sangamo Weston and other Schlumberger businesses were transferred to another group company “Schlumberger Electronics (UK)”, Weston Instruments thus becoming a division of Schlumberger Electronics (UK).
1986
In 1986 a functional grouping of six Schlumberger companies was created and given the group name of “Solartron Transducers” therefore the Weston Instrument division became “Solartron Transducers, Weston UK Division”, but still remained an autonomous entity within Schlumberger Electronics (UK).
1988
In 1988, due to a world-wide reorganization of the Schlumberger businesses, the name Schlumberger Electronics (UK) was changed to Schlumberger Industries (UK) and the name Solartron was dropped from the names of the individual companies operating within the Transducer group, thus the Enfield plant became known as “Schlumberger Industries - Transducer Division, Enfield.
Also in 1988 the two UK divisions most closely associated with the aerospace market, namely Transducer Division, Farnborough and Transducer Division, Enfield were combined under one executive management group, who together with the Sales and Marketing functions were located at Farnborough. |
