Analogues for the New Millennium
by Carl Lewis, Airframes & Equipment Sales & Marketing Manager
In this technological age of flat-panel digital display technology, it can be hard to believe that analogue cockpit instruments are still in use. For anyone still flying aircraft such as the HS 125, HS 748, Hawker 400/600/700/800, Jetstream 31/32, BAe Bulldog, VC10, BAC-1-11, Fokker 26 and 27, Sea Hawk or some Dakotas (DC-3), analogue instruments are a reality. In the majority of cases, these instruments can even be repaired, modified or manufactured new, and Weston Aerospace can provide these services.
Previous trading names include Solartron, Schlumberger, Weston Instruments and a name that is still on many old aircraft - Sangamo Weston. The company name has changed, but its experience dates back to 1886 when doctor Edward Weston founded the Weston Electrical Instrument Corporation of Newark, New jersey, USA. The Sangamo name can also he found in many other non-aerospace applications such as ground power and ground test equipment, displaying a vast range of electrical measurements such as temperature, pressure, speed and torque.
Despite the age and longevity of many of these indicators, repair and overhaul services can still be offered on many original Weston products. Even if the product only looks similar (such as the old 2 or 3" ATI Bakelite case types), repair or new-build may still be possible. Weston is also willing to look at other similar makes that may no longer be supported by the original manufacturer.
The company has developed an excellent design service capability and in unusual cases where materials or components are no longer obtainable, it can provide a design updating capability, resulting in instruments maintaining full interchangeability but having internal mechanisms technically supportable into the next millennium.
While many other manufacturers are ceasing production of moving coil analogue instruments, Weston Aerospace is still carrying out its long tradition of manufacturing and repair to the highest standards. Why send repairs to a third-party repair shop, when they can be sent to Weston Aerospace, an original equipment manufacturer?
Weston Aerospace also offers a range of servo and digitally augmented instruments in a vast range of sizes. Let us help to support your instruments into the next millennium.

Operators flying aircraft such as the HS 125, HS 748, Jetstream 31/32, Hawker 400/600/700/800, BAC Bulldog, VC10, BAC-1-11, Fokker 26 and 27, Sea Hawk and some Dakotas (DC-3) depend on analogue instruments. But as instrument manufacturers move away from analogue meter movements, who do operators turn to when something goes wrong?
Reassuringly, Weston Aerospace is committed to continuing its long tradition as a manufacturer of the finest quality analogue cockpit indicators and retains the capability to build instruments originally branded Solartron, Schlumberger, Weston Instruments and Sangamo, a name that is still on many old aircraft. Despite the age of some of the instruments, repair, overhaul and modification is still possible on many of the old product lines.
In addition, we may be able to offer repair or redesign of other similar makes that are no longer supported by their original manufacturer.
