How Torque Sensors Work

Torque shaft with two phonic wheels

A conventional transformer speed probe can be converted into a torque sensor by using a torque shaft. As the torque changes through the shaft the phase of the signal between the two sets of teeth changes.

The transformer probe is superior in this type of application as it is less sensitive to variations in the gap between the sensor and the teeth on the shaft.
