Weston Speed and Torque Probes
Weston Aerospace are recognized leaders in the design and manufacture of speed and torque probes for aerospace and allied industries.

We have the expertise to develop speed and torque probes that will generate the required output voltage, often from multiple channels when under severe space and temperature constraints, yet still deliver outstanding reliability.

This profile provides an overview of our product capability. We will be happy to provide further details upon request.

Weston Aerospace first manufactured speed probes over 20 years ago for the RB211 engine and since this time we have constantly developed our expertise in the field of speed and torque measurement to the point were we are now technology leaders in this field. Standard to our current product range are speed probes that operate at temperatures up to 500°C at the tip and with over 820°C body temperatures. Weston Aerospace’s patented transformer speed sensors generate a high, multiple channel voltage output, even with very limited space envelopes and/or high operating temperatures. We also manufacture moulded probes that are mounted in hot oil, deep inside the engine. Because of the difficulty and high cost of replacing the probes, extremely high reliability figures are demanded – the current in service MTBF for these probes is over 100 million hours.

Weston are also world leaders in the design and manufacture of torque probes and have been producing these devices and Torquemeter Electronic Comparators since the mid 1970’s. During the past 10 years, we have developed this expertise and are now producing torque probes that are repeatable to ± 0.15%. A list of the engines on which our sensors are used can be seen below.

Weston have extensive in-house capabilities for the design, development, manufacture and environmental testing of our sensors. These facilities include:

Computer aided design and stress modelling capability.
Dynamic and static test rigs.
Automated coil winding facilities.
Combined high/low temperature and vibration rig.
Pressure calibration laboratory.

Research is being undertaken within Weston Aerospace to maintain our lead in this market and we currently have programmes to further develop our surface mount technology, increase the temperature capability of the sensors and drive down the weight, whilst improving on our excellent reliability record.
